Fixing the Roof Leak on the Attic Ceiling

If you can see water marks on the inside of your attic, there is a water problem under your roofing shingles. If you can't see water sitting on the outside of the roof, the leaks may be minor, but they still need attention before they become a huge problem.

A roofing contractor can help you repair the leaks that you have and update your home so you don't have this problem again in the future. There are a few things you want to consider while the leaks are fixed.

New Shingles

If water passed through old shingles that are warped or blistered, this problem may occur again in other areas of the roof. If the roof is over 20 years old, all of the asphalt shingles  may be worn and damaged. It may be time to replace the old shingles with new asphalt shingles, or with metal roof paneling. This will prevent the worry about other old shingles causing problems in the near future.

New Insulation

Insulation that is just 5 years old could be ineffective at preventing air loss and it could need replacing. Using polyurethane spray foam insulation in the attic is going to stop air from leaking, to lower heating and cooling costs. It's also going to shield out moisture that would cause mold and mildew, and it's going to stop leaks from getting inside of your attic even if there is a roofing flaw.

Improve Ventilation

Poor ventilation in the space can cause moisture problems throughout the roof. If there is moisture accumulating and then freezing, you can end up with ice dams around the roof of the home. These will damage the roofing shingles, and when the water leaks it may leak inside of the attic. A new attic fan or power ventilator can greatly reduce the chances of having moisture problems in the space, and they can pull hot air out of the attic in the summer to help with heating and cooling costs.

Don't ignore the signs of water problems on the inside of your attic; talk with a roofing company, like Cazeault Roofing, to get the assistance that you need before the problem gets worse. You want to see if you have rotted wood, damaged insulation, mold and mildew, or other problems that can spread throughout the rest of your home. Adding these upgrades to the roof can greatly improve the quality of your home.
